ADVANCED FITNESS LAB

Comprehensive Fitness Assessment

The Comprehensive Fitness Assessment (CFA) is a thorough evaluation of your physical fitness, examining each key component of fitness. The results from this assessment can serve as the foundation for tailoring a personalized exercise program that optimizes your fitness journey. During the CFA, the following components will be tested:

  1. Anthropometrics
  2. "In-Body" Body Composition Assessment
  3. Aerobic Fitness** (bike or treadmill)
  4. Muscular Strength and Power
  5. Muscular Endurance
  6. Flexibility
  7. Balance

** Based on the preliminary prescreening data, the exercise professional will choose whether to perform a maximal or submaximal assessment.

VO2 Max Testing

This test will determine your maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) which represents the ability of your body to uptake and utilize oxygen during maximal exercise. A metabolic cart will be used to take a direct measurement of oxygen consumption while exercising on a stationary bike or treadmill. Your heart rate will also be monitored during the test. This type of test is most appropriate for athletic populations as you are encouraged to exercise at maximal exertion and until volitation fatigue. The results of your test can be used to determine training intensities and track improvements in aerobic fitness.

Body Composition Analysis

The InBody 570 uses an 8-point contact and multifrequency system offering a valid and reliable form of Bioimpedence Spectroscopy (BIS). This test only takes 45 seconds to complete and provides a detailed body composition analysis. Results include estimations of % body fat, lean muscle mass, a segmental analysis (compare sides of the body), visceral fat and basal metabolic rate. This report can be used as a baseline for tracking and monitoring. Pre-testing Instructions must be followed for the most accurate results.

Resting Metabolic Rate

Unlock your metabolism and achieve your health and fitness goals with personalized insights from our Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test. Your RMR is the base level of energy expenditure at while at rest. This non-invasive assessment will assess your respiration while you breathe into a mouth piece connected to a metabolic cart. Whether its weight loss, muscle gain or maintenance understanding your RMR is an important step towards more accurate, personalized fitness and nutrition goals.

Submaximal Aerobic Fitness Test

This test will estimate your aerobic fitness. You will be required to exercise at a moderate to vigorous exertion on a stationary bike, treadmill, or step. Your heart rate will be monitored during the test and used to predict your estimated (VO2max). Results can be utilized to track improvements and determine training intensities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at fjTesting@niagaracollege.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

You can either scan the form and email. Or you can take pictures of the completed form and email it to fjtesting@niagaracollege.ca

Please disclose any medical conditions or mediations you have been prescribed on the PAR-Q+ and medical questionnaire. The exercise professional will then determine if additional screening is necessary or if the test booked is appropriate based off the information provided.

If you have booked a fitness assessment—such as a VO2 max test or Comprehensive Fitness Assessment—and are over the age of 55 or have a medical condition that requires clearance, you will need to provide the medical clearance form prior to your session. Our staff will email you the necessary form, and it is your responsibility to ensure it is completed and returned before your appointment. Failure to do so will result in your session being rescheduled.

It is important to note that resting heart rate and blood pressure values are assessed prior to any fitness testing. Blood pressure must be less than to 160/90 mmHg, and heart rate must be less than or equal to 99 bpm. Failure to meet these values will result in the client to reschedule the session by emailing fjtesting@niagaracollege.ca. The exercise professional will also provide them with a medical clearance form that must be completed prior to their rescheduled appointment.

If you are pregnant, have a pacemaker or any metallic supports or are on your menstrual cycle, you should NOT book a Body Composition Analysis or "InBody".

It is recommended to wear comfortable physical activity clothing, running shoes and bring a water bottle. If you require a towel, please bring your own.

The exercise professional may provide general results at your session. A follow-up email with final confirmation of results will be sent to the email on file within 5-7 business days.

  • For a V02 max testing, the session is approximately 60 minutes.
  • For the InBody assessment, the session is approximately 15 minutes.
  • For the Comprehensive Fitness Assessment, the session is approximately 1.5-2 hours.
  • For the Resting Metabolic Rate testing, the session is approximately 60 minutes.

You can use this information to start training or enhance the quality of training you are doing. If you require consultation for further assistance on exercise prescription, you can book a session with a qualified exercise professional.

  • Maximal aerobic fitness testing: Involves pushing the individual to their maximum      effort level to determine their peak oxygen consumption (VO2 max), which is the maximum amount of oxygen the body can utilize during intense exercise. This assessment typically involves exercising on a treadmill or cycling on a stationary bike while the intensity is gradually increases until the individual reaches exhaustion. Maximal aerobic testing provides a precise measurement of the individual's aerobic capacity and appropriate for more athletic populations or those undergoing rigorous training programs.

  • Submaximal aerobic fitness testing: Involves exercising at a predetermined,      submaximal intensity level for a specific duration without pushing the individual to exhaustion. Does not require as much equipment or e compared to maximal testing. It provides an estimate of the individual's aerobic fitness level (Estimated VO2 max) based on their heart rate response, workload or time to completion during submaximal exercise. IT is most appropriate for general populations or individuals who may not be able to perform maximal exercise testing due to health concerns or physical limitations.

  • If you cannot attend, we encourage you to reschedule by emailing fjtesting@niagaracollege.ca.
  • If you need to cancel for any reason this must be done 24 hours prior for a full refund. Email fjtesting@niagaracollege.ca for any cancellation or rescheduling requests.
